Self-portrait

I've recently been reading a book about the English artist Samuel Palmer. This includes an early self-portrait, now in the British Museum. This was drawn using only black and white chalks on buff paper and is a very compelling image.

This work encouraged me to draw a self-portrait in chalks. I used brown Conte chalk, black Conte Pierre Noire pencil, Brown Ochre pastel pencil and white pastel pencil on dark grey paper. Comes nowhere near Palmer's subtlety and power, but heigh ho.
